Clermont versus Guelph for Tri-Mecca Supremacy

By Amy Keller in Florida Trend

On a warm March morning in central Florida, James Loaring and a half-dozen other Canadian triathletes trek down to the glistening National Training Center in Clermont. Fresh off a long bike ride through the area’s rolling hills, including a slope called Sugarloaf Mountain, the Canadians continue their workouts in the facility’s 70-meter pool. Meanwhile, other elite jocks, running the gamut from swimmers to soccer players, javelin throwers, sprinters and shot-putters, exercise in the nearby weight room.

Full Feature Story HERE

I am really looking forward to the upcoming LPC Florida Triathlon Camp. Our accommodations are in Kissimmee which offers many advantages to Clermont (example: Orange Lake Country Club Resort!) but a short distance away from the beautiful terrain that Clermont offers. Bring on Sugarloaf!

A wonderful week in Kissimmee, Florida has come and gone. The memories remain. Campers were treated to perfect weather, good eats, excellent training, and tons of fun. Coaches Jeff, Rob, and Char were an amazing help. They really know there stuff! Great times were had by all. I can hardly wait for next year! The 2010 LPC Florida Triathlon Camp will be held March 13th to March 20th.

Char's LPC Florida Camp Highlights

  • Watching the sun rise with a great cup of coffee - it's so quiet and peaceful - as if it's rising just for us. How lucky do we feel?
  • Early bird swimming at the "Lazy River" - a 350m meandering pool - one of 8 outdoor pools at our resort Orange Lake Golf & Country Club. What a fun and unique place for a group swim, and against the current to boot! Great variety when combined with the pool and open water workouts we've had.
  • Catching a cat-nap poolside - the sun feels so good and warm on my belly. Loving that Vitamin D time.
  • Eating the best orange I've ever had - deliciously juicy and perfect.
  • Shopping for dresses and other pretty girl things - Dad loves to spoil me :)
  • Patio lunches with dad - wine is fine anytime frankly, and he is such good company. Yes, I'll have another - thank you.
  • Challenging run on the Orange Grove Trail - the citrus smells are amazing, and the long gradual climbs make for a great workout.
  • Wild-life spotting - so far: 8 cardinals (love them!), 2 turtles, 4 eagles, countless egrets, and 1 scary gator!
  • Cycling, cycling, and more cycling - through cyprus tree overhang, up Sugar Loaf's steep slope, through beautiful Lake Louisa State Park - the exploring never stops. The first rides of the season are always sooooo sweet, and I'm loving every minute (even the 4 hr long ones!). Bum is feeling great thanks to the Mega Days!
  • Amazing dinners with amazing company - perfectly grilled steak, delicious grouper, fresh mahi mahi (that's for you Janie - almost as good as St. Croix), and even gator bites!
  • 1463 new freckles - at least - and counting. Gotta love em!
  • Taking my absolutely gorgeous niece Annika swimming for the first time - I am IN LOVE people!! Not a single cry - just a face of serious exploration and wonder the whole time she's in the water with you. Unbelievable. And, yes, she WILL be a swimmer. You should see her little legs kick when you hold her - and she's got long legs and long narrow feet (flippers) just like her Auntie Cha Cha, so I see big things in her future! Next swim we're going to review "flip turns" - I'll keep you all posted on her progress :)
  • Watching the sun set on the beach while finishing off my chocolate mint ice cream - I somehow forgot about this flavour for a while - funny how it took a trip to Florida to realize how much I love it.
  • Having the time to fully relax and appreciate how lucky I am to have experiences like this, and to have friends like you to share them with - thank you :)

LPC Florida Triathlon Camp

Loaring Personal Coaching (LPC) offers a one week triathlon training camp in paradise for the beginner to experienced triathlete. Campers will be spoiled by the accommodations, and neighbouring surroundings, of Emerald Island Resort, scenic rolling roads for cycling, surreal orange grove running trails, and open water swimming at the world famous Orange Lake Country Club Resort. Lake Louisa State Park is the utopian spot for an endurance "brick" work-out, and the world class National Training Center will be home to technical swims, including underwater video analysis.

Although campers will be busy training and recovering, evenings will be open to enjoy the plethora of restaurants and attractions that has made Kissimmee, Florida, an international tourist mecca. This is the perfect camp for the triathlete looking to learn from top coaches, get a jump on the upcoming season, and enjoy perfect weather and training in paradise. It is also the ideal camp to bring friends, family, and significant others, as there are numerous attractions and shopping destinations to keep anyone and everyone happy and smiling.

Our goal is to provide the ultimate warm weather multi-faceted triathlon training camp that is educational, inspirational, and FUN! A mid-March camp in warm weather provides the perfect opportunity for aerobic pre-season training, and to improve your technical skill set in all three of triathlon's disciplines. Although the heart of Walt Disney World is located only five miles from camp headquarters, you won't even have to see Mickey Mouse to leave Florida with a long-lasting smile.

Florida Triathlon Training Camp

EDIT: Full details on the March 15th to 21st, 2009 Florida Triathlon Training Camp is located here.

LPC will host its first triathlon training camp, March 15-21, 2009. The camp will take place in beautiful Clermont, Florida. It almost snowed in Guelph today, which caused me to reminisce of the great times I have had training in Clermont over the past 5 years. Bre, Annika, and I, are considering spending the entire month of March in Clermont. It will be wonderful to swim at the NTC, bike at Lake Louisa State Park and up Sugarloaf, and run over the Orange Trails.

The video below shows this wonderful terrain, which is a mecca for triathletes. The footage was taken by during a 2005 training camp with the Canadian Cross Training Club.

Video production by Dave and Megan Derry of the The Wentworth Whitehouse Group. Re-editing by LPC.
